"I am left wanting more of this poetic medicine, the words of a Cuckoo girl announcing her Spring-like transformation."

- Sarah Pritchard, Author, Editor and Co-Host of Sale Out Loud

Cuckoo (noun):

1. a long-tailed, medium-sized bird with a two-note call sounding similar to its name. Many cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds;

2. A person who is very irrational or out of touch with reality;

(verb):

The act of taking over a person's home in order to exploit it.

In this jarringly personal and deeply honest retrospective, Greater Manchester poet Linda Downs details her story: the life of a woman who has fought to find herself. Exploring life, love, loss, and the specific and peculiar people and events that shaped her being, Cuckoo is a collection of poetry that reflects its title - it is a story of a lost identity, of opportunities stolen, of a woman battling to recover all that was taken from her in order to emerge stronger and more tenacious than she ever thought possible.

From classroom to bedroom, childhood to motherhood, household to workplace, the words within these pages encourage us to ask ourselves: What is the value of hope? And can we really find meaning in even the worst of the things that happen to us?

Uplifting, powerful and poignant, Cuckoo is a collection that will sit with you for a long time.
